“'In
western Chad, some 7,300 Nigerian refugees have arrived in the past
10 days, fleeing attacks by insurgents on Baga town and surrounding
villages,' said Adrian Edwards, the UNHCR spokesman, in the Swiss
city of Geneva on Friday. 'With the recent influxes, Chad is now
hosting over 10,000 refugees,' he added.”
“Meanwhile,
Chadian authorities have called for international assistance to
resettle the increasing number of Nigerian refugees, saying over
1,000 of them are currently stranded in Lake Chad islands. According
to the reports released by the UNHCR, the violence has forced 1.5
million Nigerians to flee their homes, with more than 850,000
internally displaced.”
“Last
week, Takfiri Boko Haram militants attacked the town of Baga, close
to the border with Chad, and took over the military base used by the
Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which is made up of troops
from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.”
