“An
armed group abducted at least 89 boys some as young as 13 near
Malakal in the north of South Sudan, a UNICEF education team reported
on Saturday. The UN added the number of abducted children could be
higher.”
“The
education team said the incident occurred in the community of Wau
Shilluk in Upper Nile State. 'The recruitment and use of children by
armed forces destroys families and communities. Children are exposed
to incomprehensible levels of violence, they lose their families and
their chance to go to school,' said UNICEF Representative in South
Sudan, Jonathan Veitch, urging the children’s release.”
“The
conflict, ongoing since South Sudan’s independence from Sudan in
2011, has displaced thousands of people internally, according to the
UN.”
