“Spain's
leftist Podemos announced Friday it will let its rank and file decide
the political party's allies in the upcoming general election. 'We
are going to submit a referendum on our strategic alliances,' the
party's head Pablo Iglesias said on social media, refering to the
party’s internal citizen consulation. 'In Podemos, the people
decide,' he stated. The vote will offer the party's membership
greater say over the trajectory of the party during the upcoming
primaries. Over 277,000 Podemos supporters have already registered to
vote in the party primaries, which are being held between July
17-22.”
“Since
its founding in 2014, Podemos has rapidly risen to become one of
Spain's largest parties. Often compared to Greece's Syriza, the
party's popularity is largely based on its anti-austerity platform,
along with calls for greater equality in Spanish society.”
“The
latest opinion polls from earlier this month put Podemos neck and
neck with Spain's two mainstream parties, suggesting the leftists
could build on their success in May's local elections. Spain's
general elections are expected to be held in late November.”
